Chapter Twenty-Four

“Mitzi, we agreed you would stay out of the Darkwoods’ personal matters,” Alan said during our nightly video call.

I’d made the mistake of bringing the photos up with him, thinking he’d side with me. Wrong.

“I will. I mean, I am.”

“Except this one time, right?” Alan was sitting on the back porch drinking a beer. “You’re there as a business coach, not to be their marriage counselor.”

“Alan, if you’d seen those photos, you’d also think something bad happened.”

“Maybe, but here’s the thing, Mitzi. You don’t know if that’s what happened for sure. You’re looking at a snapshot in time with no context and drawing a conclusion based on that.”

“Alan, do you honestly believe she was willing to participate with all those men?”

“I don’t know her, but I can tell you one thing. Sex work is a big business worldwide. That’s a lot of willing participants. Has it ever dawned on you that they might have been role-playing? We’ve had our fair share of out-of-the-box fun. Remember that time we almost got caught and—”

“Yes, I remember. No need to bring it up. So, do you think that’s the reason? They were making a porno?”

“Look, Mitzi, everything you’ve told me about this couple revolves around them living a fast and exciting life. Miles away from the average couple like us. They probably have a work hard, play hard mentality for life. Plus, they’re loaded. People with money tend to do a lot of wild and crazy things we normal people don’t experience. Didn’t Timber mention they were a bit kinky?”

“She said Peter was kinky…but she did say that with a smile. I suppose it’s not what I was thinking. But seeing those men surrounding her like salivating wolves waiting their turn…disgusts me.”

“Whether that’s true or not, it’s none of your business. Aside from Timber calling for help, my advice is not to bring it up and stop your snooping.”

“I am not snooping, Alan. It’s a photo album. That’s what it’s there for.”

“You need to steer this back to her career. This is about burnout. That’s what you’re there to fix. Do the job I know you can do, and come home when you’re finished. If Timber has extra baggage, they can find someone else to help them deal with it.”

I watched Alan drain the last of the beer from the bottle. He already seemed to move away from the topic of conversation, so I stopped pushing it. However, I didn’t necessarily agree that this had nothing to do with her burnout. I think everything is connected. It’s possible that this sex club, or whatever it was, could be connected to the breakdown in her career. Of course, the only way to find out was to bring it up with Timber.

“Hey, how’s your boob? Has the bruising gone away?”

“Mostly. I’m not worried about it.”

Alan and I talked for a bit longer before ending the call. It was mostly me telling him about my trip into town with Jerome and how I had signed Timber up for a show.
